2011 Coachella Lineup Announced

Last year, TUiW went to Coachella based on its stellar lineup, and this morning we have the lineup for this year’s festival, one that seems equally enticing. The fest, held in Indio, CA from April 15-17, will be headlined by Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, Kanye West, and the reunited Strokes, with featured bands including the Black Keys, Interpol, Robyn, Animal Collective, Mumford & Sons, Bright Eyes, the National, and Death From Above 1979, who evidentially have reunited. If those names weren’t enough, throw in Broken Social Scene, Crystal Castles, Lauryn Hill, Sleigh Bells, Cee-Lo, Lightning Bolt, the reunited Big Audio Dynamite and Suede, Duran Duran, Erykah Badu, the Black Keys, Titus Andronicus, Best Coast, the Kills, the New Pornographers, Lil B, HEALTH, OFF!, Odd Future, and the Chemical Brothers. Damn. Find out more here.

The Strokes to Return March 22

It’s been almost six years since NYC rockers The Strokes released First Impressions of the Earth, their third studio album that drew less stellar reviews than the previous two. Since then, the members have explore various side projects, ranging from good (Little Joy, Julian Casablancas), to okay (Albert Hammond Jr.), to “eh” (Nickle Eye). All of that won’t matter though come March 22 when, according to bassist Nikolai Fraiture’s Facebook post, the band will release they’re fourth album on RCA. The band has been working on the record for the better part of the year, and various rumors have reported that the sessions have had bits of conflict between the members, but after last summer’s live shows and this news, it seems like they’re still going to give it a shot. As for the sound of the record, Fraiture recently told the BBC’s Zane Lowe, “Sonically, I feel it’s the album which should have been made between Room on Fire and First Impressions of Earth.” The band has a few dates lined up for this year, which can be seen below:

The Strokes:

03-12 Las Vegas, NV – The Chelsea @ The Cosmopolitan
07-16 Lisbon, Portugal – Super Bock Super Rock
07-14-17 Benicassim, Spain – Benicassim Festival
08-13 Tokyo, Japan – Summer Sonic
08-14 Osaka, Japan – Summer Sonic

The last big American music festival of the year has it’s lineup, and the Austin City Limits festival will be headlined by…The Eagles? Yep, it appears ACL will be headlined October 8-10 by the chillest band of the 1970s, along with Muse and Phish, with The Strokes, M.I.A. and the Flaming Lips taking the second string headliner bill. The rest of the lineup is filled in with big guns including LCD Soundsystem, Spoon, Vampire Weekend, Norah Jones, Band of Horses, Monsters of Folk, The National, and the Mountain Goats and lesser but good guns including The Black Keys, Broken Bells, Yeasayer, Beach House, Matt and Kim, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, Girls, Local Natives, Devendra Barnhart, The Morning Benders, and White Rabbits. Lollapalooza Lineup Officially Revealed

After teasing us with Wheel of Fortune-esque puzzles, Lollapalooza’s lineup has been officially announced. No real surprises at the top, but the festival will be headlined by The Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Lady Gaga, Green Day, Soundgarden, and Phoenix. It’s still unclear who is the main headliner, that is, the one that closes the festival. Also appearing are MGMT, Spoon, the National, Hot Chip, Erykah Badu, the Black Keys, Devo, the xx, Cut Copy, the New Pornographers, Grizzly Bear, Yeasayer, Dirty Projectors, Metric, Matt and Kim, Drive-By Truckers, Jamie Lidell, Frightened Rabbit, Fuck Buttons, the Walkmen, HEALTH, Wild Beasts, Wavves, Blitzen Trapper, Stars, Social Distortion, Jimmy Cliff, Deer Tick, Cypress Hill, Gogol Bordello, Chromeo, Wolfmother, Mavis Staples, the Cribs, Raphael Saadiq, Minus the Bear, Rogue Wave, the Big Pink, the Dodos, Cymbals Eat Guitars, the Morning Benders, Javelin, 2ManyDJs, Peanut Butter Wolf, BBU, Empire of the Sun, B.o.B., the Antlers, Warpaint, the Soft Pack, and Harlem.

Looks like Lolla has a pretty solid lineup this year. So if you’re in the Midwest and need a giant music festival fix this summer, Lollapalooza is your best bet. The festival is August 6-8 in Grant Park, Chicago.

Mini Music News Update

  • According to a report from Memphis’ Commercial Appeal, Jay Reatard’s cause of death was a lethal combination of cocaine and alcohol. It’s a sad discovery in a sad story.
  • The Arcade Fire have signed a licensing deal with the NFL to use their song “Wake Up” in during the Super Bowl. Now, before you get up in arms about them selling out, the band is giving all of the money from the deal to the Haitian charity, Partners in Health. The band has had close ties with the organization for years, and the proceeds from this should be big. In other Super Bowl news, go Colts! (I’m from Indy, don’t hate me America)
  • The Strokes have returned to the studio to record a long awaited follow-up to their 2006 album First Impressions of the Earth. There have been rumors of unrest in the band since then, and in the intervening years, there have been records released by members Albert Hammond Jr. (who has released two), Nikolai Fraiture (Nickle Eye), Fabrizio Moretti (Little Joy), and most recently, Julian Casablancas.
  • Radiohead drummer Phil Selway is hitting the road this spring to debut some material from the solo record he’s been recording with Lisa Germano, Sebastian Steinberg of Soul Coughing, and Glenn Kotche and Pat Sansone of Wilco. Sadly for us Yanks, he’s only touring Europe. Check out the dates at P4k.
  • Zooey Deschanel has signed onto a pilot for HBO based on the life of famed rock groupie Pamela Des Barres, who claimed to have bedded several of rock’s biggest names. Meanwhile, her little band, She & Him, released artwork (above) and a tracklist for their new record, Volume 2:

01 “Thieves
02 “In The Sun” (Feat. Tilly and the Wall)
03 “Don’t Look Back”
04 “Ridin’ In My Car” (NRBQ cover)
05 “Lingering Still”
06 “Me And You”
07 “Gonna Get Along Without You Now” (Skeeter Davis cover)
08 “Home”
09 “I’m Gonna Make It Better”
10 “Sing”
11 “Over It Over Again”
12 “Brand New Shoes”
13 “If You Can’t Sleep”
