Wye Oak Announce New Record, Share Single

Hot off the heels of their fantastic My Neighbor/My Creator EP, TUiW favorites Wye Oak will release their newest full length, Civilian, March 8 on Merge. Lyricist/guitarist Jen Wasner described the songs being “as a whole, about aloneness (the positive kind), loneliness (the horrible kind), moving on, and letting go (of people, places, and things).” Merge goes on to add that the album is “a kind of 21st-century folk music, imbued with dense shoegaze guitars, nearly melodic rhythms, and impeccable splashes of electronic color.” Sounds good to me! The band is sharing the fantastic title track, and we’ve got it below, along with the tracklist.

Wye Oak – “Civilian” [MP3]

2. The Alter

Up and Coming: Surf City

My first listen of Surf City’s Kudos marked the first time in a long time I’ve listened to a record and wanted to start it over and listen again. The New Zealand band packs so much punch and pop into their charging rock songsthat you can’t help but tap your foot or nod your head the entire time. Unlike so many bands that hide behind walls of distortion, Surf City embraces it, crafting catchy song after catchy song. What stands out about Surf City on tracks like “See How the Sun” or “Kudos” is that they’re carefully crafted songs, not just four guys playing their instruments, as so many indie noise makers do. Clearly influenced by the likes of Pavement and Jesus and Mary Chain (from whom they get their name), while capturing the atmospheric singing of Animal Collective, Surf City is a little indie band that you’ll fall in love with after only one listen.

RIYL: Pavement, Jesus and Mary Chain, Animal Collective, Yo La Tengo, The Clean, The Thermals, Vivian Girls

Listen and Download Free Music From Kanye, Sufjan, Deerhunter, The Thermals

Since it’s the Monday of TV premier week and things have been a little slow here at TUiW, we thought you might like a little music to kick off your week! Without further ado:

Deerhunter – Halcyon Digest

What honestly prompted this music binge is that NPR is streaming Deerhunter’s phenomenal new record Halcyon Digest a week before it comes out. The band reached new heights with their last record, Microcastle, and on first listen, Halcyon Digest moves the sticks pretty far forward for the band. A more in depth review will come after more listens, but my first impressions are that this record will make a substantial amount of year end lists, probably in the Top 5. Stream it here.

The Thermals – “Never Listen to Me”

The Thermals have a formula that works extraordinarily well: cut the bullshit and just play music. You’ll rarely catch them going outside of their punk roots, but they nail it every time. The second single from their new record Personal Life (out Oct. 19), “Never Listen to Me” is a solid track that, as with most Thermals songs, will get lodged in your head and not escape.

Sufjan Stevens – “Too Much”

This may have hit the web a little bit ago, but this glitchy track from The Age of Adz is about as far from Sufjan’s old sound as you can get, but with the all the same power of the pretty songs about Illinois. Sharply contrasted from his newest EP, All Delighted People, the album looks to open a new, fantastic chapter of Steven’s post-50 States career. Download it here.

Kanye West – The GOOD Fridays Series

Also making buzz on the web for the last few weeks has been the apparent onslaught of free music from everyone’s favorite crazy rapper, Kanye West, through his GOOD Fridays series. This week’s track “Lord, Lord, Lord,” featuring Mos Def, Swizbeats, and Raekwon is a solid winner, but if you haven’t heard “Monster,” the collaboration with Rick Ross, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, and Bon Iver, download that one first get blown away by the insane verse dropped by Minaj at the end. Check out the songs here.

Track Review: Land of Talk – “Swift Coin”

In advance of next month’s Cloak and Cipher, Land of Talk’s first new single, “Swift Coin,” serves a perfect introduction for a band that’s been on the verge of breaking for a couple of years. Elizabeth Powell’s multitracked voice swoons over the warbling guitar that is the band’s trademark, before the song breaks down into a jam worthy of LoT’s former tourmates, Broken Social Scene (Powell contributed vocals for the band during their tour together). “Swift Coin” is a song that’s simply too catchy to be overlooked.

Up and Coming: Bear Ceuse

St. Louis based Bear Ceuse is the project of Cameron Matthews, a small town Missourian with a knack for writing excellent rock music. Unlike so many other indie bands, Bear Ceuse doesn’t use distortion as shield to cover up sloppy guitar work, instead focusing on catchy songwriting, shifting effortlessly from the rock squalor of Pavement to the sweet guitar riffs of Camera Obscura. Seamlessly, the band shifts from the sweetness of “Elephant” into the hard edge of “American Wit,” a transition that can be jarring, but works to great effect. If you need one track to convince you of how good Bear Ceuse is, check out the amazing “Kiss Another,” which builds through wandering guitars, drum patters, and howls before reaching a loud climax of reverbed guitars. Make sure you download “Kiss Another” below and/or download Bear Ceuse’s free EP, Oh You Blushed!, also linked below, before Pitchfork gives them Best New Music and everyone else hears about them.

RIYL: Pavement, Camera Obscura, Titus Andronicus, Belle & Sebastian, The Mountain Goats

Of Montreal to Release False Priest September 14

Athens, GA weirdos (meant in a good way) Of Montreal will return come September 14 with False Priest, a Jon Brion produced record that will no doubt up the ante Kevin Barnes and Co. continue to raise. The album will feature guest spots from Janelle Monae and Solange Knowles, and Barnes recently told P4k the record would have an R&B sound:

“There’s a lot of very dancey, very funky songs… We try to have these ‘holy fuck’ moments where you’re really having your mind blown, especially if you’re listening to it on headphones.”

Sounds brilliant to me! Barnes recorded the album on his own in Athens before re-recording it with Brion, who’s previous credits include work with Kanye, Fiona Apple, and several film scores. Available now at the Of Montreal website is the albums first single,  “Coquet Coquette,” just by entering your email address. The tracklist, full of song titles only Of Montreal could come with, is below:

False Priest:

01 I Feel Ya’ Strutter
02 Our Riotous Defects [ft. Janelle Monáe]
03 Coquet Coquette
04 Godly Intersex
05 Enemy Gene [ft. Janelle Monáe]
06 Hydra Fancies
07 Like a Tourist
08 Sex Karma [ft. Solange Knowles]
09 Girl Named Hello
10 Famine Affair
11 Casualty of You
