According to a report from Memphis’ Commercial Appeal, Jay Reatard’s cause of death was a lethal combination of cocaine and alcohol. It’s a sad discovery in a sad story.- The Arcade Fire have signed a licensing deal with the NFL to use their song “Wake Up” in during the Super Bowl. Now, before you get up in arms about them selling out, the band is giving all of the money from the deal to the Haitian charity, Partners in Health. The band has had close ties with the organization for years, and the proceeds from this should be big. In other Super Bowl news, go Colts! (I’m from Indy, don’t hate me America)
- The Strokes have returned to the studio to record a long awaited follow-up to their 2006 album First Impressions of the Earth. There have been rumors of unrest in the band since then, and in the intervening years, there have been records released by members Albert Hammond Jr. (who has released two), Nikolai Fraiture (Nickle Eye), Fabrizio Moretti (Little Joy), and most recently, Julian Casablancas.
- Radiohead drummer Phil Selway is hitting the road this spring to debut some material from the solo record he’s been recording with Lisa Germano, Sebastian Steinberg of Soul Coughing, and Glenn Kotche and Pat Sansone of Wilco. Sadly for us Yanks, he’s only touring Europe. Check out the dates at P4k.
- Zooey Deschanel has signed onto a pilot for HBO based on the life of famed rock groupie Pamela Des Barres, who claimed to have bedded several of rock’s biggest names. Meanwhile, her little band, She & Him, released artwork (above) and a tracklist for their new record, Volume 2:
