Broken Social Scene Announce New Record

It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly five years since the juggernaut that is Broken Social Scene released their last, self titled record as a full group. Since then, they’ve continued their tireless tour schedule and released essentially two solo records for main men Kevin Drew and Brendon Canning, but it’s been five years since we heard a new, true, BSS record.

But May 4, the band will return with a currently untitled LP on Arts & Crafts.  Breaking from produced Dave Newfeld for the first time, the record was produced by John McEnitre, of Tortoise and the Sea and the Cake. BSS is known as a giant supergroup, but the album was recorded by a core group of six, including Drew, Canning, Justin Peroff, Charles Spearin, Andrew Whiteman, and a new member, Sam Goldberg. Like I said, they were just a core group, with guest spots from BSS regulars Feist, Stars’ Amy Millan and Evan Cranley, Metric’s Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw, Jason Collett, Do Make Say Think’s Ohad Benchetrit, John Crossingham, Marty Kinack, Julie Penner, Leon Kingstone, and Lisa Lobsinger. If that wasn’t enough, cameos from McEntire, Sea and Cake’s Sam Prekop, Tortoise’s Doug McCombs, Pavement’s Spiral Stairs, former Death From Above 1979 singer-drummer Sebastien Grainger, Poi Dog Pondering’s Susan Voelz, Helen Money’s Alison Chesley, and the Weakerthans’ Jason Tai are also featured somewhere on the record. Wow.
