We’ve been kind of ambivalent about awards season so far this year, but today the WGA released their nominees for the years’ best writing and kind of blew our minds. Competing alongside TUIW-favorite The Hurt Locker and A Serious Man for the Best Original Screenplay award are, somewhat unbelievably, The Hangover and Avatar. Really? You guys couldn’t think of two screenplays you liked more than Old School 2 and Dances with Ferngully?
To be fair, a number of 2009′s truly great screenplays were ineligible, including Up, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Inglorious Basterds. And, in a more delightful left field surprise, Star Trek also was nominated.
Meanwhile, on the TV side, most of the usual suspects turned up, including Modern Family, Mad Men, Lost, Breaking Bad, and The Office, but its heir (and pretty much the only thing NBC has going for it right now) – Parks and Recreation – continues to be ignored.
